7 Create the Wave Lines

Paint in wave lines to give the water even more motion. Mix a dark-blue color comprised of mostly blue, a touch of sienna and a speck of white and load a no. 10 bright to a chiseled edge. Drag your brush lightly across the canvas in thin, horizontal lines. (See the “Wave Lines” brush technique.) Put in as few or as many as you wish, varying each wave’s length. Remember, fewer lines suggests calm water and more lines give the impression of turbulent water.

8 Add Water Sparkles

Add sparkles to the water with the painting knife. Load a thin sliver of white on the long edge of the knife and drag the edge across the canvas to suggest shimmer. (See the “Water Sparkles” exercise.) Concentrate these sparkles more toward the center of the canvas, which will ultimately contain your animal subject, the heron.
